Air Traffic Control Tower – MIAL
Mumbai, India
The new Air Traffic Control (ATC) Tower at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport in
Mumbai is a striking landmark steel structure standing tall at 83m height.
With the expansion of the Mumbai airport the existing ATC tower came in the way of the flight
path. Thus a new ATC tower was designed and relocated within the airport premises. Time, Height and Fire Safety were the
most important concerns while designing this Structure. Inevitably Steel was chosen as the material for construction. The
structure was fabricated, and installed by Jindal Severfield Structres Ltd.
Newkem was handed the responsibility of protecting the structure from collapse in case of a
fire. Newkem designed a combination of Vermiculite Spray (ISOLATEK Type CP2) and Water Based Intumescent Coating (ISOLATEK
Type WB3) taking in consideration the height of the project and the aesthetic requirements of the client. These systems are
guaranteed for a period of 10 years and have been designed to give a fire rating of up to 120 mins.
